SHIB outline

This page provides lists the coarse levels of the structure of the Sussex Harvard Information Bank (SHIB) which was developed as a paper-based system. Users can click through the links to get through to the fine structure of the dataset. This page and its sub-pages are still under development and any suggestions on how they could be made more user-friendly would be welcomed. While details of fileheadings are public, access to listings under each fileheading is limited to approved users.

A   B   C   D   E   F   G   H   I   Other

Two key points: (1) the inclusion of any document or other resource in this dataset does not imply any endorsement, simply a recognition that it has some relevance to the debates on particular issues but this might include inadvertent or deliberate inaccurate information; (2) while it would be interesting to generate a search system that produced direct links to copies of documents that are not freely available online, it is not possible to reproduce documents that are under copyright without a clear “fair-use” justification in each case.

PLEASE NOTE: Only parts of the catalogue of holdings have been added to the searchable dataset while it is under development.

A — CBW TECHNOLOGY & APPLICABLE SCIENCE

B — MILITARY OR OTHER OPERATIONAL ASPECTS OF CBW

C — COUNTRIES AND ALLIANCES

D — CONFLICTSEach of the following secondary categories comprises a collection of conflict files, each one including material on a particular conflict in which CBW has been used or alleged to have been used. Each such file may also include background material on the conflict itself.

E — ARMS CONTROL AND DISARMAMENT

F — SPECIAL TOPICSThis is a convenience category: everything filed within it could also be filed in categories A-E. Its subcategories correspond to specific topics that are under active study, that study requiring information otherwise banked in several different places.

G — RELATED TOPICSThis category is for banking information not expressly on CBW but nonetheless helpful to have in SHIB. It provides, in effect, a special reference collection useful for exploiting information banked in earlier categories. Its primary subcategories correspond to main categories A-I.

H — DOCUMENTARY SOURCESThis category is for the storage of documentary and unpublished source materials on CBW matters. The subcategories are mostly by sourcetype, not subject matter. The category is also used for filing source-materials by originating agency, where that seems useful.

I — AUTHOR FILESThis category is for the storage of published papers on CBW matters by particular authors, with subfiles for each author.

  • [PLEASE NOTE: While this was a valuable resource for paper-based working in SHIB, this subcategory is being treated as a low priority for separate coding here as authors can be searched for via other tools on this website.]
